The foundation

Citation consistency is the floor everything else stands on

Citations are consistent mentions of business name, address and phone across the web, and small variations read as separate businesses to Google. One dispensary carried citations in 89 directories. An audit found 34 with errors and 47 directories holding no listing at all, leaving citation accuracy at 61%. Correcting the existing records and adding the missing ones produced 187 total citations at 97% accuracy inside six months. Standardize the format, document it, then use that one format everywhere.

The central hub

A complete profile is the difference between position 5 and position 2

Google Business Profile appears in Maps, in local search results and in knowledge panels, and profile completeness correlates directly with map ranking. Cannabis listings need the Cannabis Store category rather than a general retail one, 30 or more real photos, every service named from in store shopping to curbside and delivery, and every applicable attribute. One profile sat at 45% complete, missing photos, services, hours and attributes. Completing it moved map ranking from position 5 to position 2. A separate dispensary listed a phone number that forwarded to a previous owner. Correcting that one field raised incoming calls 180%.

01What is local SEO for cannabis dispensaries?
Local SEO for cannabis dispensaries optimizes location based search visibility: Google Business Profile optimization, citation consistency, review management, location specific content, local keywords and local link building. Map pack results, meaning the top three local results, capture 64% of location based clicks.
02What does Google Business Profile optimization include?
Complete business information covering name, address, phone, website, hours and category, 30 or more high quality photos, service offerings, business attributes, accurate categorization and regular posts. Cannabis profiles require the Cannabis Store category. Complete profiles rank higher in map results.
03What are local citations?
Citations are business name, address and phone mentions across local directories, industry publications and web properties. Consistency and accuracy directly influence local ranking. Citation building means identifying 200 or more sources, verifying current citations, correcting errors and adding citations in missing directories.
04Why does review velocity matter more than review count?
Google weights new reviews per month alongside volume and rating. A dispensary with 100 reviews collected over two years, about four a month, ranks below one with 50 reviews collected in six months, about eight a month. Velocity signals active customer engagement.
05Can a dispensary post promotions on Google Business Profile?
No. Google restricts posting for the Cannabis Store category. Promotional posts, product images and sales focused content are not allowed. Posts must be informational: hours changes, event announcements and educational content. Working outside those limits risks profile suspension.
06What belongs on a cannabis location page?
Unique content for each location: local keywords covering city, neighborhood and address, location specific hours, phone and team, LocalBusiness schema carrying that specific address, the services available there, and location specific photos. Each page ranks separately across the chain.
