Introduction

Dispensary marketing is how a licensed dispensary reaches adult customers within its state's rules, and Bud Authority sorts it into seven channels: search and the Google Business Profile, the website and menu, email and SMS, loyalty, events, press, and capped paid placements. Because ad platforms and state rules limit paid reach, three channels carry most of the work: search with the Google profile, email and SMS to customers who opted in, and loyalty where the state allows it.

This page is general information, not legal advice. State cannabis rules differ and change, so confirm any channel with your state regulator before it runs.

Section 01

Dispensary marketing runs on seven channels, and each has a ceiling

Every channel below is open to a licensed dispensary in some form. What differs is the ceiling, meaning the rule that caps how far the channel can go. Each row names that rule and the page it comes from, so any row can be checked on its own.

The order of the rows is the order of the work. Channels near the top have the most room under the rules. Channels near the bottom are capped by someone else's policy or by an audience test the dispensary has to prove.

Section 02

Search and the Google profile carry the load because paid reach is capped

Google's help page on local ranking says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. A dispensary's paid reach is already limited by ad platforms and state audience tests, so local search is the channel where a bigger ad budget does not buy a better position.

The same page says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results. The work starts there: a profile with nothing missing, and a website that backs up what the profile says.

Section 03

Home pages and menu pages earn different shares of a dispensary's Google clicks

From July to September 2026, across 31 active Bud Authority clients weighted equally, the median client took 77.5% of its Google clicks on its home page and 10.5% on its menu pages, per Sentinel, Bud Authority's internal search intelligence platform.

A median is the middle client, not a forecast for any one store. Still, the split says where to start. The home page has to answer what a searcher came for in its first screen: what the store is, where it is and how to order.

Menu pages earned the smaller share, and they are also the pages a dispensary controls least, because many menus are built by a third-party platform. That is a reason to make them readable to search engines, not a reason to skip them.

Section 04

Email and SMS go to opted-in lists, under state advertising rules

The federal and carrier rules for marketing texts need more room than a hub page has, so they sit on the SMS and loyalty compliance guide linked in the table.

State advertising rules reach the inbox too. Missouri's rule defines an advertisement to include email, texting, websites and mobile applications, so a marketing email or text is an advertisement under the same rule that covers billboards.

Missouri's own online advertising guidance gives an example of a violation: a digital flyer emailed to a licensee's mailing list that shows a marijuana product beside a caricature of an animal.

Before the first send in any other state, check whether its definition of advertising names email or texting.

Section 05

Loyalty and discounts are advertisable in some states and banned in others

Four states show how far apart the rules sit.

New York's amended 129.3 permits advertising discounts, coupons, points-based rewards and loyalty programs if the offers do not sell product below market value, tax is calculated on the pre-discount price, and off-premises ads go only through 21+ channels.

Massachusetts runs the other way. Its regulation lists gifts, giveaways, discounts, points-based rewards, loyalty programs, coupons and free or donated marijuana as prohibited advertising, with brand-name take-away bags as the only exception. The Commission's September 2026 bulletin adds that Chapter 65 did not extend advertising or discounting allowances to licensee websites.

California's rule bars advertising free cannabis goods or accessories and lists buy-one-get-one offers, free product with a donation, and contests, sweepstakes or raffles. New Jersey generally prohibits price advertising, except printed price lists and prices on the licensee's own website or a third-party website.

These four are not a national pattern, so read your own state's text before a program is advertised. New York's adopted text is on the Office of Cannabis Management's PLMA regulations page.

Section 06

Events and press: sponsoring and advertising are separate tests

Colorado's rule shows the split most plainly. A retail marijuana business may sponsor a charitable, sports or similar event, but it may not advertise at or in connection with that event without reliable evidence that 71.6 percent of the audience is reasonably expected to be at least 21. New Jersey frames its event test as the under-age share instead, as the table shows.

Earned press connects back to search. Google's local ranking page defines prominence as how well-known a business is, and says it draws on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. A news story that links to the store's site is one of those links.

Section 07

Can a dispensary advertise online at all?

Yes, within two sets of limits. The first is the ad platforms, and each writes its own rules. Microsoft Advertising prohibits marijuana ads, including medicinal marijuana. Meta's ad standards do not allow ads that promote or offer the sale of THC products. Google Ads names cannabis coffee shops among its disallowed examples.

The second is the state audience test. The table gives the Massachusetts and New York versions. New Jersey's requires reliable evidence that at least 71.6 percent of the audience is reasonably expected to be 21 or older.

Section 08

How Bud Authority approaches the channel mix

Bud Authority sells SEO, so weigh the order of the table with that in mind. Our services include local SEO and Google Business Profile management, content strategy, digital PR and link building, Dutchie SEO and cannabis marketing campaign services. Our services FAQ says we report monthly on map pack visibility, organic clicks, calls, direction requests and menu visits against a Search Console and GA4 baseline, and we do not promise a ranking or a date. Engagements are quoted after an audit, and the site publishes no rate card.

Two situations move the starting point. A store that has not opened yet begins with the new dispensary launch plan, and a brand with several storefronts has its own multi-location dispensary marketing page.

To plan a channel mix for your store, start with our cannabis marketing campaign services, call 855-BUD-4207 or email service@budauthority.com. If you would rather see where your site stands first, the optional free website audit runs an automated scan and shows a report card on screen.
